Researchers Offer Unprecedented Look Into 'Central Engine' Powering a Solar Flare

Source: New Jersey Institute of Technology

In a study published in Nature Astronomy, an international team of researchers has presented a new, detailed look inside the “central engine” of a large solar flare accompanied by a powerful eruption first captured on Sept. 10, 2017 by the Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) — a solar radio telescope facility operated by New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR).

Soft Robot Actuators Heal Themselves

Source: The Pennsylvania State University

Repeated activity wears on soft robotic actuators, but these machines' moving parts need to be reliable and easily fixed. Now a team of researchers has a biosynthetic polymer, patterned after squid ring teeth, that is self-healing and biodegradable, creating a material not only good for actuators, but also for hazmat suits and other applications where tiny holes could cause a danger.

Astrophysicist Investigates the Possibility of Life Below the Surface of Mars

Source: New York University Abu Dhabi

The findings suggest the presence of traces of water on Mars, raising the question of the possibility of a life-supporting environment. Although no life has been detected on the Martian surface, a new study from astrophysicist and research scientist at the Center for Space Science at NYU Abu Dhabi, Dimitra Atri finds that conditions below the surface could potentially support it.

'SoundWear': a Heads-up Sound Augmentation Gadget Helps Expand Children's Play Experience

Source: Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

In this digital era, there has been growing concern that children spend most of their playtime watching TV, playing computer games, and staring at mobile phones with ‘head-down’ posture even outdoors. To counter such concerns, The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) researchers designed a wearable bracelet using sound augmentation to leverage play benefits by employing digital technology.

NASA, ULA Launch Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission to Red Planet

Source: NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission: Perseverance, is on its way. It will land at Jezero Crater in about seven months, on Feb. 18, 2021. NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is on its way to the Red Planet to search for signs of ancient life and collect samples to send back to Earth. Humanity's most sophisticated rover launched with the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter at 7:50 a.m. EDT (4:50 a.m. PDT) Thursday on a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Stunning Space Butterfly Captured by ESO Telescope

Source: European Southern Observatory

Resembling a butterfly with its symmetrical structure, beautiful colours, and intricate patterns, this striking bubble of gas — known as NGC 2899 — appears to float and flutter across the sky in this new picture from ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). This object has never before been imaged in such striking detail, with even the faint outer edges of the planetary nebula glowing over the background stars.
