The battle to stop false news and online misinformation is not going to end any time soon, but a new finding from MIT scholars may help ease the problem. In an experiment, the researchers discovered that fact-checking labels, when attached to online news headlines, actually work better after people read false headlines, compared to when they precede the headline or accompany it.

In a new study, researchers describe a machine learning-based algorithm that can reduce graininess in low-resolution images and reveal new details that were otherwise buried within the noise. Instead of solely relying on microscope hardware to improve the images’ resolution, a technique known as augmented microscopy uses a combination of software and hardware to enhance the quality of images.

A material that can be used in technologies such as solar power has been found to self-heal, a new study shows. The findings raise the prospect that it may be possible to engineer high-performance self-healing materials which could reduce costs and improve scalability, researchers say. The substance, called antimony selenide, is a solar absorber material that can be used for turning light energy into electricity.

Researchers have invented a smartphone-controlled soft brain implant that can be recharged wirelessly from outside the body. It enables long-term neural circuit manipulation without the need for periodic disruptive surgeries to replace the battery of the implant. Scientists believe this technology can help uncover and treat psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases such as addiction, depression, and Parkinson’s.
